The new Silk Road will connect not just Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and China, but also member states of the European Union. Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on Tuesday, February 2, during a meeting dedicated to completion of the test run of the first cargo freight train connecting Ukraine and China.
Arseniy Yatsenyuk emphasized that Ukraine had done very hard and great work. “We had to negotiate with five countries and at least six different operators. Each has its own tariff policy, each has its internal customs procedures and regulations. But we managed to reach accord and launched this experimental train to make Russia understand that the economic and transit blockade of Ukraine would fail. So, it has failed,” accentuated the Prime Minister.
Moreover, Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced about signing a preliminary memorandum with Lithuanian partners on their consent to connect the route of Viking train with the new Silk Road. "This means that in the framework of our cooperation with the European Union and the implementation of the Agreement on Free Trade Area to the Silk Road there will be connected not just Ukraine, not just Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and China, but also states of the European Union,” he stressed.
Hence, the Prime Minister commissioned the line ministry to cut journey time from 15 to 10 days and reduce the transportation cost.
