The Olympic Movement and Olympic values are of particular importance for Ukraine, as stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at the meeting with President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach in Lausanne.
The President of Ukraine has informed on the implementation of the program of reforms “Strategy of Reforms – 2020” despite hard times and the aggression in the East of the country. Education and healthcare reforms have already been started and sports is a significant part of these reforms.
The President of the IOC has emphasized that sports had a positive influence not only on the health and education spheres, but also on the peaceful process. “The Olympic Movement and Olympic values unite people and facilitate their reconciliation, for sports has no borders. We want these values to serve global community,” Thomas Bach noted.
The parties have discussed prospects of developing the Olympic Movement in Ukraine. The Head of State stands for broadening cooperation between Ukraine and the International Olympic Committee. Petro Poroshenko and Thomas Bach have agreed on joint implementation of projects of children’s and youth’s sports education.
The IOC President has accepted the invitation of the President of Ukraine to visit Ukraine at his convenience.
The Ukrainian President has recalled Ukrainian athletes who had glorified Ukraine in the world: Serhiy Bubka, Vitali Klitschko and Andriy Shevchenko.
Emphasizing the importance of compliance with the Olympic values, the Head of State has drawn attention to the recent boxing match between Oleksandr Usyk and Russian boxer, after which there had been threats to ban the entry to Crimea for Oleksandr.
Speaking of the efforts on restoring peace, the President has emphasized that such figures like Serhiy Bubka, who is current Head of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, are true representatives of Donbas. “The whole world respects him and his achievements,” the Head of State noted.
In response, Serhiy Bubka said that he was raised on Olympic values and wanted peace and unity for Ukraine.
The meeting was also attended by Valeriy Borzov.
