Events marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence have already begun in cities across Switzerland.

Today, 22 August, a concert by the Student Symphony Orchestra of the Kharkiv National University of Arts took place in the heart of Zurich, at the renowned Fraumünster.

The origin of the musicians gives this evening a special meaning. Kharkiv is located just a few dozen kilometres from the Russian border and continues to live under the daily threat of Russian missiles, drones and bombs. Yet the university continues to educate its students. The orchestra continues to rehearse. And young Ukrainian musicians continue to create — today bringing Ukrainian culture to audiences in Switzerland.

A representative of the Embassy of Ukraine welcomed the participants and guests of the concert, noting:

“Universities, theatres and concert halls can be destroyed. But culture cannot be destroyed as long as there are people who carry it forward. This is exactly what these young Ukrainian musicians are doing today.”
